Your client/customer gave you a problem and tells you that he feels (say) approach 1 could give you the desired result.

Scenario one:

What you do is follow the approach and get to the desired results. You explain him how you got to the solution. He is satisfied and happy for himself.

This is Service mode.

Scenario two*:

You think about the problem and come with a solution. You explain him how you got to the solution. He is satisfied( ofcourse!! the hypothetical case that he accepts it based on his reasoning),happy for himself and thinks about you as a person.

This is Recommendation mode.

*Trick lies in being assertive, to make it more effective and fruitful for you. Then ofcourse! you wont need the hypothetical case.(personal opinion)
